What is pension auto enrolment?
Pension auto enrolment is a government scheme to help provide employees with a pension fund. If eligible, employees are automatically enrolled onto their company’s scheme, and can opt out afterwards if they choose to do so.
What are my pension obligations as an employer?
If your employee is over the age of 22 but under the state pension age, is a UK resident, and earns more than £10,000 per year they must be auto enrolled into your company’s chosen pension scheme. As of 2019, the minimum contribution that an employer must contribute is 3%.
What information do I need from employees to pay them?
ARB Accountants offer a variety of auto enrolment services tailored to suit your business. These services include:

What are payments using salary sacrifice?
Your employer may offer you the option of salary sacrifice as part of their pension scheme. If so, you can give up part of your salary (your sacrifice), which your employer then pays into your pension, along with their contribution to the scheme.
As you’re effectively earning a lower salary, both you and your employer pay lower National Insurance Contributions (NICs). Better still, your employer may pay part or all of their NIC saving to your pension too (although they don’t have to do this).
How much should my contribution into my workplace pension be?
In most auto enrolment schemes, you will make contributions based on your total earnings between £6,240 and £50,270 a year before tax (as of tax year 2021-2022).
Your total earnings include:
- Salary or wages
- Bonuses and commission
- Statutory sick pay
- Statutory maternity, paternity or adoption pay
The minimum your employer pays:3%
The minimum you pay: 5%
Total minimum contribution: 8%
