What is Real-Time Information?

Real-Time Information (RTI) is the system employed by HMRC for the reporting of payroll information, which requires employers and pension providers to provide detailed information to HMRC every time employees are paid.

Under RTI, the employer is required to submit information; including details of earnings, tax and NIC deducted whenever a payment is made to an employee. The requirement is to report ‘on or before’ a payment is made.

If no payments have been made in a month it is necessary to submit a nil return, otherwise HMRC may raise estimated liabilities.

Employers can not report any later than the end of the tax month (5th).

What are forms P11D, P45 and P60?

The P11D form is used to report benefits in kind. These are items or services which you or your employees received from the company in addition to your salary, such as company car, gym membership, private healthcare and interest free loans.

A P45 form is given to an employee when they stop working for their employer. You will need to provide your P45 to your new employer.

A P60 form is given to all employees by an employer. This shows your total salary for the year and the tax that you have paid in the tax year. You will get a separate P60 for each of your jobs. Your employer is required to provide a P60 to their employees by 31st May.
